FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is child-centered play therapy, and how does it help my child?

Answer

Child Centered Play Therapy allows children to heal and grow in the way they know best – through play! Kids often express themselves better with toys than words, and play therapy helps them work through big feelings and tough experiences in a way that feels safe and fun.

What can I expect at the first session?

Answer

Before we meet with your child, we want to meet with you, the parent/caregiver. The very first session is a parent consultation where we meet with you without your child present. This is a time to discuss your concerns, talk about your child, and learn what you can expect throughout your child’s therapy experience. You’ll be given a tour of the play room as we explain the purposeful set-up and selected toys.

After the parent consultation, we will schedule the first play session with your child. This session is all about building connections and helping your child get comfortable with us and the playroom environment. The goal is to help your child begin to feel safe, comfortable, and relaxed to prepare the groundwork for their healing journey. Play sessions are 50 minutes and children are given a snack at the end to help them transition from their play back to you.

How do I prepare my child for his/her first play session?

Answer

Share with them what they can expect: the day and time of their appointment, a description of the office and play room. Let them know you’ve met with us and share about the really cool play room where they will get their own special play time once a week with Ms. Shanna.

How are parents involved in play therapy?

Answer

If you are choosing play therapy for your child, you will meet with us every five weeks, free of charge, to discuss your child’s progress, share your concerns, and learn new skills to help accelerate your child’s healing journey. Why every five weeks? We know that change doesn’t happen automatically. A five-week time span allows your child time and space to change and allows us to track progress along those five weeks of sessions to share about the progress and changes in his/her treatment goals.

Do you accept insurance?

Answer

We are out-of-network with all insurance companies, but we do provide the documentation you need for reimbursement. Contact your insurance provider to discuss your out-of-network benefits. If you have these benefits, you may be eligible for reimbursement between 50 and 80% of your bill.  If you choose to use these benefits, we provide the information you need at the end of each month to file for reimbursement.

Why are you private pay?

Answer

Insurance requires diagnoses, often limits the number of sessions, and requires us to share information to your child’s permanent health record. While there might be a suitable diagnosis that your child’s behavior meets, we will see these behaviors decrease or even disappear through the course of therapy. Instead of the permanent label of a diagnoses, your child is given the time and opportunity to work through their behaviors before they come to define him/her.

What is your cancellation policy?

Answer

We ask for 24 hour notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment. We reserve that day and time specifically for your child, so it’s important you make every effort to be there. We also know that life happens and emergencies come up. You will not be charged if you need to cancel due to an emergency. Emergency situations are left up to the discretion of the therapist.

How do I schedule a therapy session with you?

Answer

You can call, email or fill out the form to request your free, one hour consultation to begin services.

Can you help with school-related issues like bullying or academic struggles?

Answer

Yes, Child Centered Play Therapy works with these issues, too. From building confidence to managing stress, through play therapy, we help kids develop the tools they need to thrive at school or home.  While some diagnoses are not curable, such as dyslexia or ADHD, therapy helps children manage their frustrations and behaviors that often are associated with these diagnoses.
